Abstract:

Rising energy costs and the pressing issue of climate change due to carbon emissions are prompting nations globally, including Turkey, to invest in renewable energy sources. The COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict have exacerbated energy price hikes, underscoring the urgency of transitioning to renewables. Solar and wind energy dominate renewable investments, albeit initial costs remain high despite promising long-term returns. Governments incentivize carbon emission reduction and mitigate energy expenses through such investments. Turkey, with substantial wind and solar energy potential, offers incentives covering up to 50% of investments, fostering a conducive environment. Retail companies in Turkey are increasingly investing in renewable energy to reduce reliance on external sources and benefit from government incentives. A study explores cost-benefit analysis methods for a retail giant in Turkey with over 3000 stores and an annual energy consumption exceeding 700,000 MWh, specifically focusing on solar power plant investments. It evaluates options including equity, credit, or collaboration with an energy company, assessing their viability through cost-benefit analysis and stimulating further discussion. This thesis underscores the strategic importance of renewable energy investments in Turkey's energy landscape and highlights the critical role of comprehensive analysis in shaping sustainable investment strategies amidst evolving global energy dynamics.
