    Call for Participation

The question of whether a CSCL paradigm exists has been the subject of debate within the community over the past 30 years. While the ijCSCL journal has dedicated some of its 2024 issues to the topic, it is still open to what extent a shared paradigm exists. Paradigms are crucial for research communities to identify their research questions, perspectives and help members navigate their corpus of theory. Given the challenges in CSCL, the authors invite researchers and practitioners to join a workshop with the claim that a paradigm can be the result of collaboration. We believe that the CSCL community has the potential to actively build its own paradigm in an orchestrated effort. First-timers and senior researchers from any discipline alike are welcome to contribute their perspectives. The workshop is designed to be highly interactive and center around community building and networking to sketch a vision for the CSCL community. Participants will have the opportunity to co-author a collaborative publication, contributing to a comprehensive synthesis of the workshop’s findings and proposed roadmap for advancing the CSCL paradigm.

    Workshop Goals

    • Identify key tools, strategies, and research practices needed for a shared framework.
    • Foster interdisciplinary collaboration to create a more coherent research identity for CSCL.
    • Initiate a roadmap for furthering CSCL paradigm development, including potential follow-up publications and projects.

    Who Should Attend?

    This workshop is designed for:

    • Researchers in CSCL, learning sciences, educational psychology, cognitive science, and computer science
    • Practitioners and educators interested in collaborative learning methodologies
    • PhD students and early-career researchers looking to engage in the CSCL research community
    • Senior scholars eager to contribute their expertise to shaping the future of CSCL

    How To Attend?

This workshop will support both in-person and online participation

    Benefits of Joining the Workshop

Gain Insights into Emerging Trends: Learn about the latest advancements in CSCL theory, methods, and technologies, including AI, AR, and collaborative analytics.

Shape the Future of CSCL: Contribute your perspectives to defining a shared research vision and theoretical foundation for the field.

Expand Your Research Network: Meet new colleagues and potential collaborators for future interdisciplinary projects.

Opportunity to Collaborate in Joint Paper(s): Workshop participants will have the opportunity to contribute to a collaborative publication, synthesizing the outcomes of the workshop.

    The Workshop Agenda

The CSCL Paradigm Building Workshop will begin with an optional, pre-workshop online exchange, taking place three weeks before the event. Participants will engage in asynchronous discussions to explore perspectives on the absence of a unified CSCL paradigm, contributing insights and potential solutions through a shared document. The onsite workshop will include an overview of pre-workshop online exchange, followed by interactive small group discussions, an expert panel discussion, and a final wrap-up session focused on key takeaways, workshop outcomes, and opportunities for future collaboration.
