Fundamental social rights are one of the most important pillars of European integration. They have been enshrined in reference texts that have multiplied over the stages of the political construction of Europe: the European Social Charter (1961), the Community Charter of Fundamental Social Rights of Workers (1989), the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union (2000) and finally the European Pillar of Social Rights, covering 20 principles, adopted in 2017 and tending to reinforce this exceptional dynamic of protection and promotion of social rights in Europe. Turkey, which signed the European Social Charter in 1961 and ratified it in 1989, is in turn carrying out regulations and reforms to bring its social rights up to European standards. On the other hand, in this country, whose level of economic integration with Europe is much more advanced than the level of political integration, many European companies operate that are expected to include social rights and environmental issues in their agenda due to their duty of care. For these reasons, social rights also occupy a significant place in Turkey-EU relations, both at the political and commercial levels. The objective of this module is to introduce the undergraduate students of Galatasaray University, the only French-speaking university in the country established in 1992 in the wake of Turkey's application to join the European Union in 1987, to the regulations and standards in the field of social rights within the EU on the one hand, and to make them aware of the measures taken by Turkey in this field on the other hand, and finally to provide information on the duty of care that European companies must respect in Turkey.
The module consists of 6 sections spread over two semesters. Methodologically, in parts 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the course, students will be expected to conduct field observations, create field notebooks and film with their cell phones those they observe and if conditions permit interview actors in the field and then conduct a class discussion based on these collected materials.
At the end of each semester, students will be asked to produce a short essay video on one of the 20 principles that make up the European Pillar of Social Rights. The selected videos will be placed on the project's website.
In addition, students will write an 8-10 page project based on the principle they have chosen. To complete these tasks, the module includes courses to develop the skills necessary to write projects and produce creative videos.
