Project Abstract
The relationship between the emerging actors of digital culture and the transformation of political communication forms has become a critical area of academic inquiry. The culture of entertainment on social media has increasingly been adopted by politicians as a communication strategy. By crafting engaging and entertaining content, politicians aim to capture the attention of voters and influence their perceptions, thereby enhancing their campaigns. Social media provides a new platform for political discourse, with humor emerging as a creative and effective tool in this evolving political communication landscape. Within this framework, the culture of entertainment introduces innovative methods and practical opportunities for voter persuasion. Moreover, the entertainment culture prevalent on social media enables politicians to establish more direct interactions with their electorate. Through active participation in discussions on social media platforms, politicians can respond to voters’ questions, share their views, and engage in dialogue. This approach not only fosters a more personal connection but also enhances the potential for earning voters' trust and confidence. This research project seeks to explore the new forms of political persuasion generated by the entertainment culture associated with social media use in Turkey. Central to this investigation is understanding how social media’s entertainment culture reshapes political participation and communication practices, alongside the strategies and methods employed by political actors to engage with voters. The study will adopt a quantitative content analysis to examine the role of social media’s entertainment culture in political communication practices. Its objective is to uncover how this culture is utilized by politicians as a political communication technique. By providing a comprehensive dataset on political representations, attitudes, and values within Turkey’s contemporary social and political context, this study aims to offer valuable insights into the dynamics of communication and participatory culture in the digital era. |
