This study aims to explore the effects of tutorials in video games and the underlying player experiences. Although there is the general notion of considering tutorial sections help creating positive emotions and prevent negative experiences, they might not always have a positive impact on the experience. Through utilizing GUESS-TR measure and semi-structured interviews, participants (N=21) were divided into two groups and playtested the game, Hitman 3, with and without the tutorial sections. By implementing subscale based analysis via the survey and semi-structured interviews, it was possible to mitigate and identify several aspects affecting the player experience in terms of tutorial sections. Moreover, the interviews and observations were then analyzed through the lens of self-determination theory. Results indicate that the two groups of participants did not differ as expected yet it was observed that participants, regardless of which group they belonged to, applied certain independent game strategies in order to provide a sense of autonomy and competence. Moreover, it is thought that the main phenomenon affecting the results is the participants' dominant effort to find the experience they expect from the game and/or to be more resourceful even if it means diverting from the guides given in the tutorial sections.
