Özet

This study examines a conept proposed in 2012 in semio-translation studies and subsequently developed: watermark translation, which is a text that reflects a foreign socio-cultural and linguistic context, produced through a translation accomplished in the author's mind. To put it more clearly, watermark translation is a narrative of elsewhere, and in this narrative, elsewhere is first and foremost a foreign geography named by its own toponyms and hydronyms, decorated by its institutions and establishments with their own names, and populated by people also named in their own language. Secondly, this geography surely has a history recognized by its figures, personalities, events, and historical monuments. Finally, this elsewhere is a culturally marked space: Signs that testify to the social life of this elsewhere constitute a very broad category. This involves transferring these elements from one language to another, through a preliminary translation that takes place in the author's mind. Since our first publication on this subject in 2012, we have studied several corpora that illustrate the concept. As our studies expanded, we came to realize that watermark translation is a particularly rich concept, applying to a wide variety of texts. Accordingly, in this study, we are going to propose a six-category typology based on the orientation of cross-linguistic and cross-cultural psychic translation, the motivations for their production, the textual genre, the temporality of the text, the number of places referred to and the extension of psychic translation within the text.
