In this study, a sample of university students has been surveyed in an effort to describe smartphone use in terms of purpose, conditions and use patterns. According to the data gathered from 842 undergraduate and graduate students, university students’ purpose of using smartphone and the conditions under which they use their smartphones are described with use patterns such as part of time, year of smartphone use, daily use of Internet, daily smartphone use and daily smartphone checking. The results indicated that the most frequent purpose of using smartphone is for texting and then talking with someone, which is followed by social media checking and doing Internet search. The less frequent purpose is doing shopping. University students mostly use their smartphones mostly to spend free time when they get bored, are alone and/or wait for someone. Concerning use patterns, majority of university students, who have been using their smartphones for about 3 years, use their smartphones at night and/or in the evening, use their smartphones approximately 5 hours in a day, connect to the internet about hours in a day and check their smartphones about 32 times a day.
