Özet

In 1766, a severe earthquake struck Istanbul, leaving massive casualties and massive damage in its wake. Even though its ramifications have been studied from different perspectives, an analysis from the legal standpoint has hitherto not been carried out. This study is an attempt to fill in this gap in the literature. In doing so, the Istanbul court will be put in the center, and its records shall be scrutinized. The study reveals that the Ottoman Empire took immediate action and the necessary steps after the earthquake, with the court serving as a central and multifunctional body throughout, fulfilling multiple tasks (e.g., adjudicative, notarial and administrative). The research also sheds light on numerous issues, elucidating various aspects of eighteenth-century Ottoman legal history.
