Özet
This study examines literary representations of the city from the perspective of the semiotics of space. The article uses concepts in Algirdas Julien Greimas's article, "Pour une sémiotique topologique" ('For a Topological Semiotics') to analyze Kenizé Mourad's De la part de la princesse morte ('Farewell Princess'). The novel's descriptions of Istanbul, Beirut, Lucknow (in India), and Paris evince distinct identities and textualities, coloring the background of the novel and significantly adding to the narrative's semiotic universe. The analysis concentrates on three elements: First, the place and the importance of the cities in the novel as represented in its title and subtitles; second, a comparison of the metropolises in both discourse and story; and third, a thymic analysis of the four places from the point of view of the heroine. In this way, the study attempts to illustrate municipalities' plurilingualism and multiculturalism through an analysis of a work in which the four cities of the dead princess function as the four principal actors of the story.
