The FuelEU Maritime regulation, which will come into effect on January 1, 2025, will mark a significant milestone for maritime transportation. Hence, this study examines the suitability of various electrofuels, which are nonfossil–based, to the FuelEU regulation through a case study and life cycle cost assessment is carried out. The study showed that E-methanol and E-ammonia fully comply with the FuelEU regulation beyond 2050, while E-diesel cannot meet 2050 limits. Nevertheless, from the cost perspective, E-diesel is the dominant one and a suitable option for an existing ship; on the other hand, E-methanol and E-ammonia are suitable options for newbuild ships.
